Pre AEW Dynamite Weekly Discussion - January 8th, 2020

Welcome to the weekly AEW Dynamite pre show post!
Anniversary show! Also a big tribute to Memphis wrestling! AEW wrote up their own preview, so I didn’t have to write this one! 2020 win/loss records in parenthesis pulled from AEW Roster.
Tonight’s Official Preview
On January 8th of 2019, the inaugural AEW press conference was held in the shadow of TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville to announce the formation of All Elite Wrestling. Fast forward one year and fans have experienced multiple pay-per-view events, several B/R Live events, the debut of “Dynamite” on TNT, and the crowning of World Champions for the Men's, Women's, and Tag Team divisions within AEW.
It's been a crazy year, especially since “Dynamite” began coming to your homes weekly on Wednesday nights, and the insanity will not let up anytime soon as AEW heads to the Memphis area for the very first time to debut at the Landers Center! One championship will be decided, two big tag team matches are signed, and several men have some major decisions to make about their futures! All this and more with the wrestlers of AEW this week on “Dynamite” live from Southhaven, MS!
AEW WOMAN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
RIHO (0-0) (c) vs. KRIS STATLANDER (0-0)
Kris Statlander finished up 2019 as the #1 ranked woman on the AEW roster, setting her up for a title challenge at the Homecoming edition of “Dynamite” last week in Jacksonville. Unfortunately a scheduling conflict that predated Statlander's commitment to AEW arose, and the company permitted her to honor those commitments.
In that match's place, AEW Women's World Champion Riho successfully defended her championship against the #2-#4 contenders in one match, but as seen in the video above, left that match in far worse shape than she started thanks to the uncontrollable Nyla Rose. Yet, in spite of that assault, Riho is honoring her commitment to defend the championship against Statlander this week on “Dynamite”!
Statlander heads into this title confrontation with possibly more momentum than any other person on the AEW Women's roster. Her opponent, on the other hand, is nowhere near 100% despite being given the okay to compete after Rose's attack, but Riho's will to compete and to win is undeniable. Adversity is nothing a stranger to the champion, and no matter how she feels walking to that ring, when the bell rings, Statlander will have a fight on her hands.
CODY (1-0) & DUSTIN RHODES (0-1) VS. THE LUCHA BROS (PENTAGON JR. (0-1) & REY FENIX (0-1))
Family is something that has shaped AEW in many ways; be it Matt and Nick Jackson, Cody and Dustin Rhodes, or Pentagon and Rey Fenix, the bonds of blood have been a driving force in this company, particularly within the tag team ranks. Fans have seen The Young Bucks and The Lucha Bros go to war on many occasions since the inception of All Elite Wrestling, and they have seen the brotherhood of Cody & Dustin fight it out with the brothers Jackson as well.
But for the very first time, when AEW comes to Memphis, the fans will bear witness to the Rhodes brothers stepping into the squared circle within The Lucha Bros! This is a tag team match that dreams are made of, and with the record books wiped clean for 2020, it could also shape the picture of future contenders for the World Tag Team Championships held by the SCU duo of Scorpio Sky and Frankie Kazarian.
This is just one more example of All Elite Wrestling hosting the absolute best tag team wrestling anywhere on the planet each and every week!
KENNY OMEGA (1-0) & “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE (0-0) VS. PRIVATE PARTY (MARQ QUEN (0-0) & ISIAH KASSIDY (0-0))
Another example of that top shelf tag team competition is here in this battle of two duos at different points in there AEW journey. Private Party is without a doubt one of the most gifted teams on the roster, and they've demonstrated that on numerous occasions, particularly when the defeated The Young Bucks in the AEW World Tag Title Tournament and Proud-n-Powerful on “Dynamite”, not to mention nearly capturing those Tag Titles at the “Full Gear” PPV event.
Kenny and Page, on the other hand, are certainly two of the most gifted individual wrestlers on the planet, but as a team they are in the nascent stages of their evolution. They've competed in a few matches together, had a moderate degree of success, but it's a duo that appears to exist only due to the insistence of Kenny Omega rather than a true desire from Page to be in a team. This is a man who stepped away from his Elite brethren to go nomad, and that path has led him to dark places. Fans have witnessed his drunken antics both backstage, and most recently in Jacksonville, at the commentary booth. Page has been keeping it together for his matches, but once that final bell rings, all bets are off. Just ask his opponents this evening how the man has been acting, or watch the video above to see for yourself.
What will it take to right the good ship Hangman? Clearly it was not seeing his Elite brothers close out last week's “Dynamite” riding high, and thus far it has not been this pairing with Omega not matter how much Kenny may want it. Perhaps it will fall on Private Party to smack some sense into Page this Wednesday night live on TNT (and boost their own standings in the rankings as well).
CHRISTOPHER DANIELS (0-0) VS. SAMMY GUEVARA (1-0)
To say Sammy Guevara is riding high after that victory over Dustin Rhodes (as seen in the above video) would be an understatement. A man already prone to arrogance, Sammy might be on a whole new level after scoring a win over a true legend in Dustin, regardless of how it happened and the involvement of Jake Hager.
But it doesn't even take that kind of victory to bring out the bravado of Guevara, his own mouth and trash talking of SCU during an interview with Jen Decker is what got him into this match, and that was before he even defeated Dustin! Only now, heading into Wednesday night, Sammy has some momentum and extra swagger thanks to the victory while Christopher Daniels seems to be doubting himself after that “incident” with Pentagon Jr.
Daniels, a man with championship pedigree and a resume that cements him as one of the greatest of this generation, needs to overcome his case of wrestling yips in order to put down Sammy. Now “The Spanish God” will no doubt have Inner Circle back-up, but so to may Daniels have his SCU brothers at his side to even the odds. It is a generational battle, but for Christopher Daniels, it is reasonable to say that the win here would mean so much more.
JURASSIC EXPRESS (LUCHASAURUS (0-0), JUNGLE BOY (0-0), & MARKO STUNT (0-0)) VS. THE BEST FRIENDS (TRENT (0-1) & CHUCK TAYLOR (0-0)) & ORANGE CASSIDY (0-0)
Added to the card Monday night, these 6 man will dance to settle an issue that, on the surface, seems to be about something as basic as a hug. But watch the segment of “Road to Memphis...” embedded above and viewers can see that it is about something deeper than that. It's about show and prove...
In the case of JurEx, it is the same thing it has been about since day one of AEW, establishing themselves in a company crowded with the best wrestling talent on the planet, and proving they deserve to be included among them. Jungle Boy did it when he hung in with AEW World Champion Chris Jericho for ten minutes, Luchasaurus is clearly one of the biggest men on the roster, and Marko has made it his mission to silence all the critics. All three men have been embraced by the AEW fans for their heart, their skill, and their will to persevere despite any odds.
The Best Friends and Orange Cassidy, OC in particular, have also been embraced by AEW fans worldwide for much the same reasons as the Jurassic Express. Trent has had some of the biggest successes of the trio, claiming a pinfall victory over Rey Fenix in tag action and Pentagon Jr. one-on-one, as well as competing in bouts with Jon Moxley and PAC. And in assorted matches they've also beaten Private Party, as well as gone at it with PnP, TH2, The Young Bucks, and SCU.
But now, in the 2nd “Dynamite” of the year, these two trios have a chance to break out and exert a dominance they did not solidify in 2019. And viewers can bet that whichever team has their hands raised in victory, well there will probably be a hug to celebrate.
MOXLEY HAS HIS ANSWER FOR JERICHO…
For several weeks the question has lingered: will Jon Moxley join The Inner Circle? AEW World Champion Chris Jericho extended the offer to Mox to stand with his group, and since that initial offer, has upped the ante to lure the top contender into the IC: 49% stake in the group, an EVP title, a new car, and a personalized license plate to go with it. Difficult offer to turn down for sure, and one that left Moxley with some things to ponder over his flights to/from Japan over the weekend. This writer would even speculate that Jericho may have continued to push the issue or sweeten the deal during their mutual overseas travel...
Now, with both men back on American soil, Moxley has promised to make his decision public this Wednesday night face-to-face with Le Champion. Which way will Jon go? Credit the man for his poker face because he has given no tell as to which way he is leaning. One thing is certain though, should Jon Moxley choose to align himself with The Inner Circle, the balance of power within AEW will firmly rest with Chris Jericho and his unit, and it may become an impossible feat for any man, woman, or unit to stand up in opposition.
MJF MADE HIS DEMANDS, CODY TO RESPOND…
Last week on “Dynamite”, MJF and Wardlow strolled to the ring as confident as ever and laid out Max's stipulations for Cody if the estranged friends were ever to have a match against one another. To get what he wants, Cody must (1) agree to keep his hands off MJF until the “Revolution” PPV on February 29th, (2) agree to receive 10 lashings from Max on live TV, and (3) agree to a CAGE MATCH WITH WARDLOW! Clearly, and as easily predicted, each of these stipulations is designed to tip the balance into MJF's favor should Cody accept them all to get that head-to-head with his former best friend.
“How badly do you want this?” is what MJF wants to know; Cody has to agree to put himself through hell and humiliation in order to get this match, and his willingness to do just that is the question Cody will answer this Wednesday night when he steps foot in the ring for the anniversary edition of “Dynamite”.
TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDS OF MEMPHIS…
The Memphis area is a territory steeped in professional wrestling history, and All Elite Wrestling is a company that recognizes the rich traditions and the foundation upon which today's in-ring offerings are built. It is with that in mind that AEW, as part of our own Anniversary Celebration, will also celebrate the legends of Memphis! Brian Christopher, Angelo Poffo, Randy Savage, Tommy Gilbert, and Dave Brown, just to name a few, will be celebrated this week at the Landers Center, but if you want to experience this tribute to its fullest, you need to grab your tickets at AEWTix.com to be in attendance Wednesday night!
This Wednesday night, AEW takes over the Landers Center for the Anniversary Edition of “Dynamite” LIVE on TNT! The action kicks off on TV at 8pm EST/7pm CST, with doors opening at 6:30pm CST, and you can be there in-person courtesy of AEWTix.com. Great seats are still available for our fans in the Memphis area, or make sure you catch all the explosive action on your television screens.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: There will be no Observer Rewind on Friday, because I expect to be recovering from a July 4th, 'Merica-induced hangover. Presuming I still have fingers left, we'll pick back up Monday.

  • The Invasion PPV is in the books and appears to have been a major success. As a show, it was nothing special. One great match, a good main event, and everything else was the usual decent, average, bad, forgettable undercard. Early signs are that this show probably did big numbers on PPV (yeah, that's putting it mildly). It ended with Austin turning heel again, after seemingly turning babyface just a week or two ago, and defecting to the WCW/ECW side. Dave talks about how Austin's brief face-turn seemed to reignite business. Raw ratings were the highest they'd been in 3 months, ticket sales for Invasion saw a major boost following the Raw angle with him, etc. Austin's heel turn at Wrestlemania led to an almost instant downturn in TV ratings and attendance so Dave seems kinda befuddled why they decided to do it again at Invasion, considering last week's babyface turn showed instant signs of improving business. Austin also worked the PPV with 3 broken bones in his back and 2 broken bones in his hand (suffered at King of the Ring). He has breaks in the L-2, L-3, and L-4 vertebraes in his back, but he gutted out the match anyway. Chris Jericho worked the show with a hyper-extended elbow and Kurt Angle has whiplash and a black eye.
WATCH: Steve Austin turns on WWF and joins the Alliance
  • They were literally still constructing the stage during the show. During the Heat pre-show match, you could see crew members sawing plywood and hammering stuff to form the left side of the "V" ramp. Chavo Guerrero had to come down the "WWF" side of the ramp because the WCW/ECW side wasn't finished yet. WWF usually books an arena 2 days in advance to do all the setup necessary, but a WNBA game was booked the night before and it went long (due to an N'Sync album release party after the game) and the WWF crew wasn't able to get into the arena and start constructing stuff until the morning of the show.
  • Other notes from the PPV: Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy stole the show, with RVD winning the hardcore title from Jeff. Dave gives it 4 stars. Speaking of titles, if they aren't going to run 2 separate companies, they desperately need to get rid of some of the belts because with all the WCW titles, it has practically doubled the number of champions. X-Pac was booed even though he was a WWF guy and they're supposed to be the babyfaces. And of course, it ended with the Austin turn with him joining the Alliance.
  • WWF has reached a temporary agreement with the bankruptcy court to be allowed to use the "ECW" name through the end of July. The trustee argued that the ECW intellectual property is owned by the ECW estate they are managing and WWF had been using it without authorization and the court had received complaints from several creditors that ECW owes money too. A couple weeks ago, WWF offered the court $150,000 to buy the ECW trademarks and tape library and were turned down. WWF upped its offer this week to $250,000. In response, the trustee agreed to allow WWF to use the name for now while they figure this out. WWF appears to be the only party interested in purchasing the ECW name and library so it's likely they will make a deal. There's a lot more to this but it's all boring legalese about trademark law and shit like that. Besides, we have a follow up story on this later in this issue....
  • Last week, Dave had a pretty big obituary for Terry Gordy, but he mentioned that he wasn't able to write a full one by press time. And this week, whew. He's got an exhaustively long obit. But he has more news on it. Gordy died of a heart attack caused by a blood clot in his home. He lived his Freebird gimmick and was a wild partier during his younger days and would get wildly out of control. Dave has stories in here from Michael Hayes and Ted Dibiase about some of Gordy's wild ways. He also tells a story of the Freebirds pissing on somebody and then adds "literally, as the Freebirds in that era were known for giving people they liked--and sometimes didn't like as well--golden showers." Like it was some sort of initiation thing I guess. Well okay then. He also recaps a story about the Freebirds debuting in Memphis and in their very first match on live TV, Michael Hayes shit his pants and had to go backstage during the commercial break to change. There's actually a lot of really funny stories in this obit. But of course, the partying got to be too much and shortly after winning the Triple Crown title in AJPW, Gordy collapsed at a Roppongi night club in Japan from an overdose and his heart stopped beating. He was revived and survived but Giant Baba stripped him of the title and nearly fired him. He managed to keep his job but Baba never fully trusted him again and never again pushed him to the top of the company. In 1993, at the absolute peak of his career (he was making $10,000 a week in Japan and $200,000 a year from WCW), he overdosed again on a flight to Japan and once again fell into a coma. Again, his heart stopped and he had to be revived with CPR. He spent 5 days in a coma and suffered severe brain damage. When he awoke, he was never the same. He had to relearn how to talk, how to walk, and eventually, how to wrestle. He tried to make a comeback, working small indies here and there and even brief runs in ECW and WWF, but the overdose had destroyed his in-ring ability. Despite his success and all the money he made in his career, Gordy died with very little money in the bank and no life insurance. They played "Freebird" at his funeral. Michael Hayes is coming out of retirement next month to take Gordy's place at an indie show that he was booked for before he died. Just 6 days before he passed, Gordy was backstage at the Smackdown tapings and was said to be mentally more clearheaded than anyone had seen him in years and seemed mostly like his old self.
  • NJPW had their latest Sapporo Dome show and Dave is perplexed by the booking of this company. The show was booked around the idea of NJPW wrestlers facing a bunch of outside wrestlers and MMA fighters, and the NJPW side lost almost all of the matches. Yuji Nagata lost to PRIDE champion Mark Coleman. Former RINGS fighter Masayuki Naruse won the IWGP Jr. title from Minoru Tanaka. Another PRIDE fighrer, Gary Goodridge, beat Manabu Nakanishi, and so on and so forth. The whole thing just made NJPW look weak and this has been going on for months now, with the NJPW guys never getting their wins back and MMA stars basically running roughshod over the company (yeah, we've reached peak Inokism now. This shit damn near killed the company in the early 2000s).
  • The trustee in the ECW bankruptcy case has hired lawyers to facilitate the sale of the ECW estate to the WWF. Right now, the lawyers have to untangle some stuff, particularly the fact that video game company Acclaim is still making a stink about the fact that they own 15% of ECW and that they should have the rights to it all since Heyman has folded it. But long story short, the lawyers are pretty much just trying to untangle all the legal red tape so that WWF can swoop in and buy it up when they're finished. Heyman's team is still gathering all the records they can and Heyman has to appear before the trustee next week. Heyman himself filed for personal bankruptcy last week, which most people expected. Heyman claimed to have around $2.8 million in personal debt from the filing and is owed $128,000 in back pay for himself (turns out the wrestlers weren't the only ones not getting paid. He wasn't paying himself either). In his filing, Heyman listed the WWF as his current employer, as a television writer, at a salary of $4,000 per month.
  • NOAH star Kenta Kobayashi has returned from his recent injury and they finally gave him a new name! Since his real name is so similar to one of Japan's biggest stars, he is now going by simply KENTA (and in 6 days, he's going to start kicking heads off in the 2019 G-1).
  • Bam Bam Bigelow will return to NJPW for the first time since 1992 to work the next tour. He'll be part of the G-1 World tournament, which is basically like the G-1 Climax, but for foreign wrestlers (I can't find any actual details on this tournament so I had to research it by looking up show results. Turns out Bigelow isn't in it after all. Don Frye ends up winning the whole tournament. Scott Norton, Scott Hall, Super J, Giant Silva, and others were also in it).
  • The elections for the Japanese Diet (their version of Congress basically) will be taking place this week and if you recall, Atsushi Onita is running. Polls indicate that Onita is likely to win, due to his name recognition and certainly not because of his political acumen. Satoru Sayama (the original Tiger Mask) is also running for office but he doesn't have the same mainstream name value and his chances aren't looking as good. But for what it's worth, Sayama has been traveling around his district, with the Tiger Mask on, campaigning for votes. Dave says it's hard enough to trust politicians when you can see their face but he'd never trust one wearing a mask. After all, a vote for La Parka could end up being a vote for DDP!
  • There's a shoot-fighting show happening in Japan soon, and it's notable because Dos Caras Jr. will be fighting a guy named Kengo Watanabe. Caras Jr. was a top tier amateur wrestler in Mexico and hoped to compete in the 2000 Olympics but it didn't happen. Dave doesn't know if he'll be wearing the mask or not, but if he does, he'll be the first person Dave knows off to compete in an MMA fight while wearing a mask (that would be Alberto Del Rio, and yes he wears the mask. Spoiler: Del Rio wins this fight when Kengo suffers a GNARLY broken arm less than a minute in. They have a rematch in 2002 and Kengo chokes him out to avenge the loss).
WATCH: Alberto Del Rio vs. Kengo Watanabe - 2001 shoot fight
  • Remember the Atlanta Gold Club strip club that is on trial for a bunch of racketeering charges and alleged connections to the mob? Well, a former dancer named Jana Pelnis testified this week that she performed sexual favors for Eric Bischoff's wife after the couple came to the club and took her to a nearby hotel. Pelnis testified that Bischoff's wife slipped her $200 before they got to the hotel and that the club owner gave her another $800 when she returned. Pelnis also admitted to performing sexual favors for other athletes, such as NBA players Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo. Eric Bischoff was called to testify the next day and he admitted the story, but also claimed to have been very drunk and said the night in question was a blur. Bischoff said he didn't recall having intercourse with Pelis and said he only recalled his wife and the dancer performing sexual acts on each other while he watched. Bischoff claimed it was a spontaneous thing, not prostitution, and that he later gave her another $100 after dropping her off because he wasn't sure if she had been tipped for lap dances she had done earlier that night at the club. Oh Eric, you scoundrel.
  • We have another case of a child being killed while doing wrestling moves. A 9-year-old boy in NC died after he suffered a broken neck when his 16-year-old mentally handicapped step-brother tried to perform some kind of wrestling move on him. The case immediately got national headlines and was compared to the Lionel Tate case that has been central to the WWF's lawsuit against the PTC. On MSNBC this week, they had a segment debating wrestling's influence on children and WWF Corporate Relations VP Gary Davis appeared on the show to defend wrestling and talked about how kids always imitate what they see on TV, argues that it's the parents' responsibility to monitor what their kids do, etc. Just the usual stuff.
  • Hulk Hogan says his plans to start a new promotion are on hold for now, saying the major TV networks aren't interested in wrestling right now. Some of the names that have been attached to Hogan's idea were Jimmy Hart, Sting, Bret Hart, Roddy Piper, Kevin Sullivan, Sable, and Chyna. Some of them aren't legally able to do anything until their WCW deals expire and others (like Bret Hart), Dave doesn't believe for a second were even considering it. But either way, not happening for now.
  • Sandman went on a radio show and said he's going to be starting full-time with a new promotion in Evansville, IN. He said the promotion will also have Curt Hennig, Sabu, Public Enemy, and a whole bunch of other former ECW stars. They already have their first show scheduled for the ECW Arena in Philadelphia and a few cities in between (that would be a company called Main Event Championship Wrestling. That first show had all the big ECW names on it, plus Buff Bagwell, Chris Harris, Mike Rotunda, and more. And far as I can tell, they never ran another show after that).
  • At another indie show this week, a bunch of ICP fans were heckling all the wrestlers. Steve Corino worked the main event and got into a confrontation with one of the fans and it got physical. Corino ended up having to be pulled off the fan by a bunch of other wrestlers. Corino out here beating up juggalos, you hate to see it. (Here's an article I found on Deadspin where someone who was there writes in and tells the story of what happened).
READ: Deadspin Wrestler Run-Ins: Steve Corino beats up a juggalo
  • The state of Nevada unanimously agreed to sanction MMA as a sport and confirmed that UFC 33 will take place at the Mandalay Bay Casino (fun fact: this show sucked and to this day, Dana White still calls UFC 33 the worst show they've ever done). Anyway, now that UFC PPVs are available on cable providers again, UFC is likely going to be the closest thing to competition WWF will have anytime soon. Dana White played down the idea of competing with pro wrestling, saying they compete with boxing. But he said if UFC gets a TV deal, he believes they could give WWF a run for their money.
  • On Sunday Night Heat this week, Bob Holly pinned Mike Awesome clean. Dave thinks that's a pretty dumb decision and that none of the Alliance guys should be losing yet, especially to undercard guys, but apparently some WWF wrestlers (Undertaker specifically) that have worked with Awesome haven't been impressed with him as a worker and, well, here's the result.
  • Dave finally read The Star tabloid interview with Chyna, where she talked about her reasons for leaving WWF and the Triple H/Stephanie affair. In regards to the affair, she said she was suspicious that Triple H (her boyfriend at the time) was cheating on her with Stephanie and said they admitted it when she confronted them. Chyna said she was heartbroken and had hoped to marry Triple H some day. But despite all that, she says it was unrelated to her leaving WWF, saying she left because they couldn't agree on money terms in her recent contract negotiations.
  • Chyna did another interview on a Boston radio station and said she was scared and excited to try her luck in the entertainment world without being "Chyna." She also said she was surprised when WWF pulled out of their contract negotiations. She blamed the death of WCW and Vince having a monopoly as the reason she didn't get the money she was looking for. Dave says Chyna was asking to no longer work house shows so she could be off during the weeks to pursue acting roles, while still making top star WWF money, and they weren't going for that. Plus, ya know, the other stuff....
  • Chris Benoit will be using the song "Whatever" by Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace as his entrance music whenever he eventually returns.
  • Kane filmed a Chef Boyardee commercial last week, along with the one the Dudleyz filmed. (I can't find the Dudleyz commercial, but here's the Kane one).
WATCH: Kane's Chef Boyardee commercial
  • Jim Ross did a conference call or something recently and talked about a lot of things. He said ECW didn't have the same number of fans WCW had, but said that WCW had eroded its fanbase so much by the end and said the ECW fans were much more vocal and passionate about the product. Said that Sting is 42-years-old and wants to stay home with his family and said he likely wouldn't be coming to WWF. Admitted that they were interested in bringing in Ric Flair and Goldberg, but it doesn't make economic sense for either side right now, since they still have those WCW contracts. Said a lot of the undercard WCW wrestlers they have under contract will be sent to the developmental companies like OVW or HWA so they don't get rusty and can improve some more. Said the long term goal is still for WWF and WCW to run as 2 separate companies, each with their own prime time weekly show, but there's no word on when that will happen. Said they haven't given any thought about what to do with the women's title now that Chyna is gone from the company and she was the champ, but Ross assumed they'll probably do a tournament for it eventually. Said he expects Jerry Lawler to return sooner or later, but he's dealing with some personal issues right now (yeah, Stacy had just left him at this point). Ross admitted that the locker room situation has been tense and uncomfortable lately, with the WCW guys trying to acclimate to the WWF way of doing things but said that aside from all the Buff Bagwell drama, there's been no serious issues.
  • Speaking of locker room tensions, there's a lot of concern about job security among all the lower and midcard guys. With so much new talent lately and no other place in the U.S. to make a real living as a wrestler, a lot of guys are worried about not being used. If you're off TV, it's "out of sight, out of mind" and so a lot of wrestlers are hiding serious injuries so they don't get taken off TV and forgotten about. Also, because of the pressure to look good and stand out from the pack, sources tell Dave steroid use is making a big comeback lately.
  • In a WWF.com column, Jim Ross wrote some veiled comments about people in the company leaking information to the internet and how those sources have hidden agendas and are liars and blah blah. (*laughs in Meltzer*) Dave says this is in reference to recent internet reports that WWF is planning to release a bunch of wrestlers soon. Dave says the stories aren't entirely true, but they're not entirely false either, as there are a lot of names who are on the chopping block right now due to the fact that there's just too many guys and not enough spots, so he expects to see some people gone soon. Dave also says there's major heat on some people in the office right now for these stories leaking out, but no names mentioned.
  • Triple H has been backstage at the TV tapings for the last few weeks, helping with the booking of the shows. He was told by doctors that all this extra travel was putting him behind schedule on his rehab time and to stop flying out to every TV taping if he wants to make a full recovery. Triple H has decided to listen to the doctors and won't be going to the shows as much.
  • There was some minor heat on RVD at the Invasion PPV because his airbrushed tights had a skull on it, and that's Austin's gimmick. Goddamn, this petty high school nonsense, I swear......anyway, there was a mixed reaction to RVD's match backstage. Obviously, RVD and Jeff Hardy stole the show and a lot of people loved it, but others criticized it, saying it was only good because RVD had the "right" opponent and wouldn't be able to have that kind of match with anyone else.
  • The storyline on TV last week with Kurt Angle hugging Vince was an inside joke on DDP. Apparently, when DDP first signed his WWF deal, Vince went to shake his hand and DDP grabbed him and hugged him instead, like they were longtime friends. Apparently they found it funny and decided to parody it with Angle on TV.

Ranking of All of the FWF World Tag Team Champions in History

INTRODUCTION
Coming up on 2 years in FWF, the tag division has brought us some of the most memorable moments, feuds, and matches in the history of the promotion. Since its creation in early 2018, the FWF World Tag Team Championships have been held by 10 different teams. In an age where tag team wrestling is underappreciated, the tag titles have been held to a high regard in FWF, allowing some of the all-time greats to hold these prestigious belts. Here we rank all of the tag teams to hold tag gold in FWF.
[10] British Devastation
When Lewis McIntyre and Harry Mills were put together as a team, many in FWF thought they would be unstoppable, sadly that isn’t how that turned out. British Devastation made only one appearance in FWF as a team, and that was when they fought Jayden Christopher and Latcho for the vacant World Tag Team Titles, and they won.
A mere 6 days later the team disbanded, as Harry Millers left FWF and retired from pro wrestling. As for Lewis McIntyre, he’ll show up next on this list. Overall these two as a tag team lasted only one match, and had no effect on FWF as a whole, hence why it ranks last in the list of FWF World Tag Team Champions.
[9] U.K’s Finest
Yet another team comprised of two of the U.K’s top talent, this time, the Scottish-born Lewis McIntyre and the Northern-Irish star Cam Doyle. The genesis of this team began with 2019’s War of the Trios Tournament. This was an 8-team single-elimination tournament where FWF would crown the inaugural FWF Trios Champions.
Current Money in the Bank holder, Nicholas Pablo, saw his nemesis Tyler Sorrow in the tournament and decided he wanted a team of his own. After weeks of searching, he found two more wrestlers from the U.K, and thus U.K’s Finest was born. W
ales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland all represented well, the team looked nearly unstoppable. They defeated two teams to make it to the finals against the team of No Lives Matter and Axel Payne, but they ended up losing in a match nearly two hours long. After the grueling match, Pablo decided to abandon his team, and left them to fend for themselves.
Once that happened, it seemed they weren’t going to be able to do much, then a Number One Contender’s Match came their way. U.K’s Finest would win and be named challengers for The Howling’s FWF World Tag Team Championships, and at Chambers of Chaos, they would capture the gold.
Their reign itself was very unimpactful, they held the titles for 50 days, but only defended them once when they lost the belts. Soon after Lewis McIntyre would leave FWF, while Cam Doyle would rebrand himself and stick to his Irish-brawler roots and feud with the likes of Axel Payne.
[8] Headhunter Enterprises
From U.K’s Finest, to the team that beat them for the belts. This odd team consisted of the big bruiser Qu’Ran Cook and an FWF veteran, in Duane Carter. Overall, the team looked quite impressive.
Originally the two were recruited by Jayden Christopher to take out Jay Storm during their feud, but when they failed, Jayden scolded them and they went off on their own. Qu’Ran Cook had been a competitor in FWF for a while, but had never been in any major matches or feuds, but with Duane Carter taking him under his wing, they were able to capture the World Tag Team Titles and become the longest reigning champions at 122 days.
Sadly, Qu’Ran Cook would get injured and the team would have to forfeit their titles after only having defended twice on episodes of Blackout. Although both have now returned, neither are interested in reforming their tag team.
[7] ATF
Shawn Collins and Inoko Kenta were at one time two of the most controversial wrestlers in FWF, but only by association. When Ethan Blade decided to take on Kadar Santorelli’s legacy with the faction Infamous, he looked to two guys, Shawn and Inoko.
As a team they were unstoppable, their biggest win came in a title defense against No Lives Matter, but throughout their reign they had occasional defenses on Blackout. It seemed as if they could never be stopped, until Summer Showdown.
At the event, the new team of Jason Kennedy and Timothy would destroy ATF to capture their first gold in FWF. After the loss, Inoko and Shawn would leave FWF, before returning in the 2018 Apex Cup, where Shawn Collins nearly made the finals.
In a tie-breaker which would decide who went to the finals of the Apex Cup, Jason Kennedy defeated Shawn in 4 minutes, causing him to leave FWF permanently. Inoko Kenta would leave stick around until Climax where he would lose in the Triple Crown Championship Triple-Threat to the then-champion, DDG.
[6] No Lives Matter
Perhaps the longest-tenured team on this last, No Lives Matters’ origins come from a faction they were a part of, along with Jayden Christopher and Emmanuel Alexander, known as Genesis. The faction was formed to stop all of the chaotic villains of FWF, specifically Ethan Blade and Axel Payne.
When they were both subdued, it was a turning point in the group. Tyler Sorrow would win a shot at Jayden Christopher’s FWF Championship, and when he defeated Jayden, it was the beginning of the end. They would stay together until Tyler lost the championship; enraged, he attacked the man who beat him, Ricky Lynch. When confronted about the attack, Tyler told all of FWF that him and J Sinister would be going on their own, and that “No Lives Mattered.”
The team would challenge for the tag titles multiple times in losing efforts, before entering the War of the Trios Tournament. They would team with Axel Payne to make it to the finals, and eventually win the FWF Trios Championships, becoming the first to do so. Their reign wouldn’t last long however, as 19 days later they would drop the belts to the stacked team of Jayden Christopher, Butcher, and Nicholas Pablo.
After an argument with Axel Payne, J Sinister and Tyler decided to go on their own for a while. Tyler would go on to feud with Nicholas Pablo and Jayden Christopher, while J Sinister would attempt to win the Triple Crown Championship on two occasions.
After Tyler Sorrow’s victory against Jayden at Summer Showdown II, the team would reform and fight Jayden Christopher and Butcher for the vacant tag titles, succeeding. Since then, they have yet to defend the titles, but have been active parts of FWF, competing at Climax and winning Tag Team of the Year at the FWF End of the Year Awards 2019.
[5] Black Lotus
A team between a former FWF Champion and a juggalo, it sounds as weird as you think, but somehow this strange team worked. Adam Winters and Vampz were long-time friends before joining FWF, having competed along the indy scene for years. Immediately when they stepped through the Freestyle doors, they made an impact.
In their debut match they won the, now defunct, FWF Tag Championships. They would win another piece of tag gold, before FWF’s massive rebranding in late 2017. When all of the gold in FWF was changed, so did this team.
Once the first FWF World Tag Team Champions were crowned in the beginning of 2018, Black Lotus were the first to challenge for the belts. They would go on to defeat The Febreze Brothers 2.0, Ricky Lynch and Jayden Christopher, in their first match with the duo. After that, the two teams had a slew of classic matches.
2/3 Falls Matches, No DQ Matches, all culminating in the first and only Tag Team Three Stages of Hell Match to date. This occurred at FWF’s Bloodbath PPV, with the three rounds being a Normal Tag Match, a 15-Minute Iron-Man Tag Match, and a Hell in a Cell Match. The near hour long bout was brutal, leaving both teams exhausted, but that wasn’t the end of their feud.
After losing the tag titles back to Jayden and Ricky in the Three Stages of Hell, Adam Winters would go on to win the FWF Championship, and enlist a newcomer, in T.G. Sting, to team with Vampz in a Triangle Ladder Match for the belts at Climax.
They would fail to capture the gold, and after Climax, Black Lotus went into hiatus. Brief appearances from both have happened since then, but they have never officially reformed their team.
[4] Jason Kennedy and Timothy
Before he would become the most dominant FWF Champion of all time, Jason Kennedy would debut in FWF teaming with long-time friend Timothy.
Soon after their debut, the duo would compete for the tag titles at Summer Showdown against ATF, and they would destroy their opponents. After that match, there was no stop in sight. Jason and Timothy would defend their belts a handful of times after, including a victory against The Brothers of Payne in a chaotic tag team Hell in a Cell Match at Roulette IV.
The reign would end at FWF's fourth Rumble event, where Axel Payne would secretly attack Jason Kennedy after he had won the FWF Championship, making him unable to defend his tag titles with Timothy. Without Tim's knowledge, Axel would go under disguise as Jason, and cost the duo their tag team championships.
Jason Kennedy has since been the only man in history to hold both the FWF Championship and FWF World Tag Team Championships simultaneously, eventually retaining his title against his rival, Axel Payne, at that year's Climax.
[3] The Febreze Brothers 2.0
The inaugural FWF World Tag Team Champions were one of the best. Jayden Christopher and Ricky Lynch held the belts two times while teaming, and a third time during their blood feud in late 2018. In early 2018, FWF had been fully rebranded. No longer were the two-minute title reigns and comedy elements, it was time for a more serious product.
Funny enough, one of the comedy elements of FWF did stick around, that being The Febreze Brothers 2.0. The original Febreze Brothers were of course Latcho and Jayden Christopher, the two founders of FWF. Once Latcho went on to his part-time status and Jayden had achieved much single success, the boss felt as if he should retire from the ring all together, then came Ricky Lynch. After being friends for nearly 5 years, Jayden brought Ricky into FWF as a way to help create a new star, and to help gain some love back for pro wrestling.
What ensued was one of the best tag runs in recent memory. Ricky and Jayden would win a tag tournament in January of 2018 to become the first-ever FWF World Tag Team Champions, and from then on they defended against all tag teams.
Their first challenge came in the form of Black Lotus, after only 28 days of holding the titles, they would lose to Adam and Vampz in a slugfest at Chambers of Chaos. After another month, the two teams would battle in a Three Stages of Hell Match where The Febreze Brothers would once again win their championships, becoming two-time World Tag Team Champions.
After that, they would hold the belts for an impressive 77 days, defending against their former rivals and new teams, such as Infamous. Around May of 2018, Jayden would be blindsided by a returning RJ Munchies, and would be put out of action for over a month, causing him and Ricky to relinquish their coveted titles.
When FWF’s One-Year Anniversary came along on June 16th, Ricky was ready to team up with his mentor and recapture their belts, yet Jayden chose Latcho as his partner. When they lost to British Devastation, Ricky snapped. He attacked both Latcho and Jayden, and turned on his former mentor to become a solo act.
It would take months for the two to meet again, but when they did, it was hard to watch. After his failed FWF Championship run, Ricky would return at the Rumble PPV and enter a tag team battle royal as Jayden’s partner, where he would attempt to eliminate Jayden from the match, accidentally hitting challenger Jalen Xander off of the apron, giving him and Jayden another Tag Team Title.
The two stared at each other, angry and confused, not knowing what to do about their situation. On the next episode of Blackout, Ricky and Jayden were scheduled to defend their belts against the newly formed team, Yakuza. Ricky decided to no-show the match, and Jayden defended the belts alone in a handicap match, where Yakuza would capture their first FWF World Tag Titles.
After the match, Ricky would brutally attack Jayden, busting him open and wiping Jayden’s blood on his chest. The fans, disgusted, had no idea what would happen to FWF. For the next two weeks, a new show rose, ‘FWF is Ricky.’
Nobody knew when the nightmare would end, until Jayden chased Ricky down to his own home and they brutally fought in a brawl that would see both men crashing off of the second-story bedroom.
This all lead up to the main-event of Climax III, Jayden and Ricky finally faced off in a match for the ages, where Jayden would just barely defeat Ricky in an hour long No Holds Barred Match.
The two stars only crossed paths one more time, at the End of the Year Awards 2018, since then neither have interacted with each other.
[2] The Howling
Today, DDG and Jay Storm are both former (and current) FWF Champions, but every story has its humble beginnings. For the first few months of their runs here in FWF, it seemed as though DDG would be destined to become the top champion, and Jay would fight mostly for the now-defunct U.S. Championship. Then came Climax III.
At this show Jay Storm took one step further into his future super-stardom by winning the Money in the Bank Briefcase, while DDG successfully defended the Triple Crown Title. Soon after Timothy would defeat DDG for his singles gold on an episode of Blackout, and after that, the two best friends would decide to fight for the World Tag Team Titles.
They would challenge the lethal Yakuza for their tag belts on Christmas Day, and win. From then on they would trade the belts back and forth, eventually losing their second title reign due to U.K's Finest.
Although neither reign was that long, The Howling/Yakuza feud brought FWF's tag division back to the promise land, and gave hope to future teams looking to make their names in FWF. Soon after they lost the tag titles, The Howling would team with perhaps FWF's biggest underdog, EC Collins.
The trio would go on to defeat Butcher in a three on one handicap match to capture the FWF Trios Championships, becoming the third team to do so. Since then they have spent 272 Days as champions, and counting. This officially makes them the longest reigning champions, of any title, in the history of FWF.
[1] Yakuza
Jayden Christopher often sights Yakuza as one of his favorite creations. For nearly a year, Razor Matsumoto and Akira Nguyen were on their own, moving randomly throughout FWF’s shows, not having a place in the company. Then, lightning struck.
After a brief meeting, Jayden introduced the two competitors, and thus began the most dominant team in the history of FWF. Soon after meeting each other, the chemistry became apparent, the two Japanese stars would enlist the managerial skills of Razor’s wife, Akane Matsumoto.
Akane would lead her boys to their first Tag Title on an episode of Blackout in late 2018, the duo would hold the titles for 41 days. During that time they would defend their championships in an exhausting match at Climax, against the team of Johnny Cass and Jalen Xander, led by former FWF Champion, Duane Carter.
They would eventually lose their belts to the team of Jay Storm and DDG, The Howling, on Christmas Day. From then on, perhaps the best tag feud in FWF history would commence. Over the next three months, The Howling and Yakuza would battle multiple times, with Yakuza picking up the belts once again, before dropping them right back to The Howling three weeks later.
Before all of this, Yakuza would win the Tag Team of the Year Award for 2018, and after the feud with The Howling, they would battle in an emotional retirement match for Akira at Meltdown in 2019. The match was nominated for a Match of the Year Award in 2019, ultimately losing out.
Since then, Akira and Razor have returned as of FWF’s fifth Rumble Show in November of 2019. Since the event, they have been quiet, but one day they will return.
CONCLUSION
With some reigns lasting 6 Days, and other lasting months, the FWF World Tag Team Championships have always added a welcomed element of surprise to the promotion. Out of all of the teams in FWF's History, few have been able to say they have held tag gold, but the majority that have, have been etched in history as some of the greatest competitors in FWF history.
