In late May, long before the vessel set sail, the Echizen Maru's 61 crewmembers took a COVID-19 test in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires and tested negative. They boarded a plane and flew to Ushuaia, where they entered a 14-day quarantine period at a hotel. Weeks after they put out to sea, some individuals began to show COVID-like symptoms, and the Echizen Maru returned to port. Fully 57 out of 61 crewmembers tested positive; of the remaining four, two individuals are awaiting test results. Two individuals were hospitalized with COVID-related illness after an onboard medical exam by local public health officials. As the maximum incubation period for COVID-19 is widely believed to be about 14 days, the case raises interesting questions for epidemiologists. "It is difficult to establish how the contagion [came on board], since in these 35 days they have not had contact with land and the supply [of food and fuel] it is only done when leaving the port," said Alejandra Alfaro, director of primary health care at Tierra del Fuego's health ministry. Source HereBut. But. I thought Covid-19 was caused by contact. That's strange, isn't it. And it's definitely not good, because as I mentioned above in the UK, it seems those in the USA can't get antibodies either.
Using data from dialysis centers in the United States, the study, published in The Lancet, estimates that less than 10% of U.S. adults have virus antibodies, meaning everyone else is potentially vulnerable to infection. Source HereWe are so screwed. The virus doesn't cause antibodies and might not need human contact to spread. This is the end, my friends. We're done. That's all she wrote. Game over. Thanks for all the fish. Might as well say Good Night and drift gently into the long cold night.
In addition, the positivity rate of tests – a key indicator when trying to determine how widespread a virus is in the community – now hovers around 1 per cent. While it has increased from August, it’s nowhere near the rate recorded in April and May when it reached 17 per cent at one point. When diagnostic tests were put up against blood antibody screening surveys, the gap between what was diagnosed with testing and how many people were actually infected became stark. A Public Health Ontario survey suggested more than one per cent – some 160,000 people – had been infected with COVID-19 and recovered by June 30 – more than four times the number of infections diagnosed with nasal swab PCR testing by that point. Source HereHold the press and stop the news. More than four times the people had antibodies for Covid-19 than infections indicated by PCR testing? So we can develop antibodies in Canada, but you're crap out of luck in the UK and the USA. Makes sense, doesn't it? And wouldn't that make the mortality rates less severe if four times the population already has it? Of course it would. But keep that quiet. We can't have anyone asking any questions about the data, can we? DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO DIE! Don't be selfish, get your vaccination and save civilization!
The problem comes in the potential for dangerous side effects like antibody-dependent enhanced disease, a condition in which antibodies formed in response to a vaccine actually make future infections with the virus more severe. "What happens if you take the vaccine, the virus mutates, comes back this fall, and those that got the vaccine actually now have a worse case?" Poland said, noting that this effect occurred before in a vaccine for dengue and an inactivated measles vaccine. Poland said, "They're going to make vaccines that they don't know if the vaccines work or if they're safe, but they're going to go ahead and make them. If they're wrong, they'll throw them away." Even if risky strategies like challenge trials or emergency vaccine use aren't undertaken, the speed at which current COVID-19 trials are proceeding will require a lot of follow-up study to validate the safety of whatever vaccines wind up reaching the public, Orenstein said. Most of the trials will be at best in the thousands" of participants, Orenstein said. "There will be a need for a system to monitor safety after a vaccine is used in much larger populations to look for rare adverse events." Source HereOk. Not good. Not good at all. Look. We have a vaccine that was rushed through development. The first phase should just be ending under normal conditions. This should have taken five years or so. And it wasn't FDA approved. It was FDA emergency approved. Big Difference. And now we learn that we can create a situation, like we have in the past, called antibody-dependent enhanced disease.
Phase 3 trials, which involve large cohorts of up to 40,000 people, typically take two to three years. That's because adverse effects sometimes take a while to appear -- especially if they involve smaller groups within society. Upshur points out 95 per cent is an exceptionally high success rate. "It's a new technology. It's a new vaccine. We've never had 95-per-cent efficacy before and we've got a very bad track record with respiratory virus vaccines." Both Pfizer and Moderna have applied in the United States for emergency approval to use the vaccine. That would mean everyone in the trial gets a dose of it, effectively ending any way of monitoring its ongoing effects. Mistake, said Upshur. A side-effect that only harms one in 15,000 people still adds up when you're inoculating billions. "We should let these trials run to completion. Source HereSo now we won't be able to monitor side effects. That's convenient, isnt it? Did everyone in the trails get a vaccine, effectively ending any chance of monitoring the placebo group vs the vaccine group? But hey, all good. The vax is safe and fun.
The Oxford group is also giving acetaminophen to participants in an advanced, phase III trial now underway in Brazil too. In another major study of the vaccine, involving 10,000 people in the UK, you can’t participate if you have an allergy or condition that could be made worse with acetaminophen. No mention of the extra drug, though, in the same group’s trial in South Africa.Journalists could have pressed them on this issue months ago. The first people to get vaccines are carefully picked to be the least likely to have a negative reaction. If the Oxford vaccine is knocking them around badly, it might not bode well for the rest of us. Don’t get me wrong: A day or two of pain or illness wouldn’t deter me from getting an effective Covid-19 vaccine. But I think we need to be prepared if that’s going to be the case. Source HereSo keep popping the anti-inflammatory and all good. And you're all good, right?
All of these patients have had serious underlying illnesses. We can’t say that people die from the vaccine. We can say that it may be coincidental. “It is difficult to prove that it’s the vaccine which is the direct cause.” Bloomberg reported that only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was being used in the country by Friday and both companies were looking into what happened. NOMA’s investigation of 13 of the deaths found that common adverse reactions to mRNA vaccines, including fever, nausea and diarrhoea, could have contributed to death in some frail patients, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) had said. Source HereThe vaccines may have caused the deaths, or they might not have caused the deaths. We can't be sure. Ok. So why didn't you just finish that statement? Here, I'll do it for you. You can't be sure because you don't have enough data from the emergency approved vaccines to determine if the vaccines caused the deaths. But hey, me worry? Nah.
Deaths in care homes in England have hit the highest level since mid-May, according to the latest official figures, which revealed a 46% jump in coronavirus-related deaths in the last week as the more transmissible variant of Covid-19 breaches care homes’ defences. In the week to last Friday, 1,260 deaths in care homes involving Covid-19 were reported to the Care Quality Commission, a sharp jump from 824 and 661 in the previous two weeks. The weekly death toll in care homes had fallen to well below 100 in early October. Source HereOh.

Ken, there are many people who won't get the vaccine for a number of reasons. The long term negative effects, if any, are unknown. The COVID-19 vaccines have been in development for about six months, where a normal efficacy process can take up to six years. So, what's the worst thing that could happen if you do get the shot? A sore arm? Or that the shot isn't effective on you? Source HereNothing to worry about.

The global campaign, investigators now believe, involved the hackers inserting their code into periodic updates of software used to manage networks by a company called SolarWinds. Its products are widely used in corporate and federal networks, and the malware was carefully minimized to avoid detection.Though the initial intrusion occurred earlier this year, Trump has decimated the cybersecurity arm of the federal government and failed to nominate confirmable leaders of Homeland Security. Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law: "These are last-minute kind of pushes by the outgoing administration and the Republican Senate majority," he said, meant to ensure that "the commission [will] not be very effective heading into Biden's presidency… It does seem like there is likely to be gridlock and the commission is not likely to do very much that's substantive."Michael Pack removed the acting director of Voice of America on Tuesday, installing a controversial ally in his place. Pack, CEO of parent organization U.S. Agency for Global Media, replaced VOA director Elez Biberaj with George W. Bush-era director Robert Reilly. The move immediately garnered criticism as Reilly has an extensive history of homophobic and anti-Islamic writing.
NPR: Reilly's 2014 book, "Making Gay Okay: How Rationalizing Homosexual Behavior Is Changing Everything," argues strongly against gay marriage. In public remarks, he said at least a murderer or a consumer of pornography ultimately regrets what he or she does, but asked, "What if you organize your life around something that is wrong?"An investigation by the Veterans Affairs inspector general found that Secretary Robert Wilkie worked to discredit a congressional aide who said she was sexually assaulted in a VA hospital. According to the IG, Wilkie “obtained potentially damaging information about the veteran’s past,” leading his staff to pressure VA police to scrutinize her and try to discredit her in the media. The report (PDF) states Wilkie received this information from Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), a former Navy SEAL, who served in the same unit as the female veteran, Andrea Goldstein. Crenshaw refused to cooperate with the investigation.
NYT: President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. is likely to replace Mr. Pack once he assumes office, agency officials said. But Mr. Reilly may be harder to remove if language in the National Defense Authorization Act, a defense spending bill passed by the House, is signed into law that requires the U.S. Agency for Global Media’s chief executive to gain approval from an advisory board before replacing the head of a media network under their purview.
"The election's not over," Johnson said when asked if he would run again, referring to the November election that Biden won. Asked when he would make a decision, Johnson said: "Once the election is over."At a hearing on the pandemic last week, Sen. Ron Johnson invited a vaccine skeptic, a critic of masks, and two doctors who have promoted hydroxychloroquine to treat the coronavirus. Democrats boycotted the hearing and numerous Republicans opted not to ask questions; only Sens. Johnson, Rand Paul, and Josh Hawley took part.
“The panelists have been selected for their political, not their medical views. And for that reason the composition of the panel creates a false and terribly harmful impression of the scientific and medical consensus,” said ranking Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, in his opening statement before leaving the hearing. As an example of the unfounded claims presented at the hearing, Dr. Jane Orient said “Maybe instead of putting masks on everybody, we should be putting lids on the toilet or pouring Clorox into it before you flush it.” Dr. Ramin Oskoui told the committee that wearing masks, social distancing, and quarantining do not work.

Our daily update is published. States reported 2M tests, 215k cases, 126,139 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 3,695 deaths. The 7-day average for tests is at a record high. After a major dip around the holidays, the number of reported tests has come back to record levels. The case and hospitalization numbers are at very high absolute levels, but — at least for the past few days — both measures have leveled off in all regions. While case counts continue to decline in the Midwest, reported deaths are still 3.5x what they were in October, and 50% higher than the worst of the spring in the region.
